Greenburgh Academy PBIS Program Rolls on From a Distance

With the start of our distance learning program, our faculty immediately recognized that we must adapt our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) program to reflect the new digital world we are now educating students in.

The schools PBIS and SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) Committee, which includes teachers Inez Arrigo, Hiroko Nakashima, Ryan Crews, Catie Graves and Yomary Rodriguez; social worker Tiffany Nagorny; school monitor Lashanda Effort (Ms. B.); and principal Mike Voron, quickly operationalized and redesigned the program so students could continue reaping the benefits.

The program, awarding students for attending live classes, completing work and demonstrating digital citizenship, allows students to “buy” rewards such as $5 and $10 Amazon Gift Cards, “virtual lunches” with a teacher or administrator and creating a class dance or handshake. In addition, the committee created a weekly raffle, in which earned points are converted into entries. Each week, a PBIS Celebration takes place where staff and students connect and take a breath at the end of the week. Grand prizes include a choice of a 40” flat screen TV, Apple AirPods or a Bose Home Stereo Speaker. There are also two runner-ups in the raffle who receive $25 Amazon Gift Cards. Starting on Friday May 15th, students will also be recognized for best attendance, most points, most improved, Upper School Student of the Week and Lower School Student of the Week. Students will be presented with a certificate and a $5 Amazon Gift Card. All rewards and prizes with a monetary value are funded by Stand with GNC, Inc., the community nonprofit partner of the district.

Our first grand prize raffle winner selected a flat screen TV, which she received on her birthday!
