 SPRING 2018
Dear Parents,

The 2017-2018 school year promises to be an exciting one at GNC as we embark on many new initiatives.

Throughout our four academies, we have expanded elective courses driven by student interest, added AP (Advanced Placement) classes and SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test) prep, opened a therapeutic farm (yes, with real live farm animals), and incorporated animal-assisted therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) into our therapeutic framework. We have hired additional clinicians who are teaching our students self-regulation skills that will help them be more successful in all aspects of their lives.  We have also hired a cadre of transition specialists who are feverishly working to expand transition opportunities on and off campus.  We want to make certain that students striving for the CDOS (Career Development and Occupational Studies) credential are afforded meaningful vocational opportunities that will enhance their chances of post-secondary employment. We also have added inclusive higher education opportunities so GNC students can participate in a college environment with support prior to high school graduation.

While adding new opportunities, we continue to offer the many initiatives we are known for, including our varsity athletics (we have winning teams), cosmetology, and driver’s education just to name a few.  We are totally immersing our staff in professional development activities that support our commitment to differentiated instruction for all types of learners, mindfulness, and other DBT skills, and transition, transition, transition – because the academic and social/emotional supports we can provide students in our small classes do not last forever. Our students need to learn to become independent, productive members of society and that learning does not solely take place in a classroom.

I am so excited to see how far we can take our GNC students on their journey toward adulthood.
