As the warmer weather hits, the Greenburgh Academy students were busy showing off their skills in recognition of Black History Month. There was an energy in the air as students prepared to put their talents in music, art, history, and literature on display through a variety of performances.
Mr. Gomes and Mr. Hartung organized the event, full of music, dancing, biographies, and even drama. That’s right, while Denzel Washington stars in the big screen adaptation of Fences, seniors Maggie A., Jasmine B., and Marcos V. from Mr. Nafz’s ELA classes performed several emotionally charged scenes right from the pages of August Wilson’s award winning text.
Mr. Belluzzi led the performers in his rendition of the Greenburgh Blues, while Jasmine B. played the piano and Mr. Extra strummed the guitar. Juquan P., Russell Z., and Dan M. played instrumentals throughout the production, while Matthew and Kadeisha performed dance routines to a cheering crowd. Other Greenburgh students read biographies of notable black heroes, highlighting the struggles they had to overcome to make their mark on the world. It was a positive event where all students came together to celebrate in unison.
The teachers and students of Greenburgh Academy would like to acknowledge the strength, wisdom, and courage of those heroes who came before us, and helped pave the way to create a world that we could be proud of.
