GA Black History Month Celebration 2018

On Tuesday, February 27th, 2018, the students of Greenburgh Academy in Yonkers came together to hold an assembly in honor of Black History Month. Ms. Heredia kicked off the show with a quick introduction before M.C. extraordinaire, Mr. Crews, introduced the guest speakers. Local firefighter Reggie Crews spoke about the challenges that he has faced as an African American with dreams of serving his country and home town of Yonkers, while NY. Poet and Lyricist, Marcus John, received a standing ovation with his freestyle poem “I See Color.”

Once the introductions were over, the show was handed over to Mr. Extra and the rest of the music department to entertain the rest of the student body. Rusty Z. kicked off the show with a melody of songs on the keyboard. Jalen J. opened up with his favorite Langston Hughes poem, “I too” while Alexis W. recited “Black Priviledge” by Crystal Valentine. Seniors Elizabeth R. and Alexis W. graced the crowd with their rendition of “When you believe” and “Thinking About You” and Alexis B. and Shamiyl B. performed “Lean on Me.” The celebration soared as the dance crew took the show over. Dance crew members, Dre E., Luis R., Dejany W., and Kadesha R. brought the crowd onto their feet to close out the set.

The teachers and students of Greenburgh Academy would like to acknowledge the strength, wisdom, and courage of those heroes who came before us, and who sacrificed to improve the rights of everyone, and helped pave the way to create a world that we could be proud of.
